Bükkalja Wine-District (Foot of the Bükk Hills)
According to many people, the Bükk is the most beautiful range of hills in Hungary. The area abounding in forests, fields, hills and mountains is highly suitable for vine growing. The Bükkalja wine district was established as a result of a decree of 1970, following the successful planting of vines in the region in the preceding years. Thirty years were of course not enough to create a distinctive image for the wine district. The wine growers are trying instead to sell their wines to the producers of other wine regions, although they have all the necessary natural conditions needed for producing good wine. The area of nine hundred hectares ranges from the border of the wine-district of Eger as far as the outskirts of the town of Miskolc.

The leading wine growing settlements of the region are Bogács, Cserépfalu, Cserépváralja and Tibolddaróc. In these four villages alone, we can find more than two thousand wine-cellars, in some places hollowed into the tufa one on top of the other. The popular row of wine-cellars in Bogács is located in the Cserépi street, well placed to serve visitors to the local spa with wines.
We can't leave out the name of László Prokai, a wine-grower of Bogács. The young producer fell with great enthusiasm to making the best of the possibilities of the region. And he met with success, as his white and red wines - agreeable drinks with individual characters - gained prizes in several regional wine competitions.

We can find more and more lodging houses welcoming guests in the small villages of the wine-district. The dishes of the region prepared according to traditional recipes provide an outstanding gastronomic experience. For example, according to the legends, the "Matyó Bachelor Detaining Soup" - prepared with eggs, the symbol of fertility - was served when suitors came to see the families with marriageable daughters. This soup was offered to the bachelor chosen by the parents for their daughter. Another typical delicacy of the region is the Farmer's Roast Bükk Style ("karmanádli", roasted garlic tenderloin and spare rib with potato).
